My strong belief that the only way for average Singaporeans to reach Financial Freedom and to be able to retire comfortably before 65 years old, is to grow their wealth through investing in property, and to start early. Let me share with you how I get this conviction.

In the early 1990s, I have a friend, John, who is a SIA steward in his mid 20s, and he bought his first BTO flat and upon MOP, he immediately sold it and pocket a handsome profit of $200k plus. With the profit, John upgraded to a bigger HDB in a better location and within 5 years, he sold it again and pocket another $200k plus. Now with bigger funds, he bought 2 condos, one for own stay and one for investment in Orchard Road, and continue his flying career with SIA. This year, before reaching 55, he decided to retire as he had generated enough passive income to allow him to live comfortably.

I was glad that I had known John and was influenced partially by him. The strategies we used then were more of gut instinct vs thorough research. Just to share a quick outline of my tagline. 

In the past, I did not put any attention to property investing as I continue to pursue my career as a professional accountant for more than 25 years.  Believe in the traditional way of growing my wealth by having a stable job career. 

I rejected the suggestions that one of my siblings gave me about property investing around 2008.  The fact is, what I have seen, how my sibling had grown his financial wealth through property investing since 2008.  From a HDB 5 room to a 99 years 3 bedroom private condo bought from a sub-sale and make himself slightly more than half a million.  He then reinvested his monies into a 2691sqft leasehold land property.  In less than 5 years, he move on to his current 4 storeys freehold landed property. 

What strikes me? He embarked on his journey without much knowledge about property investing but guts.

It was when I took a break from my professional career in 2010 and having a little more time to think that I realized the monies either cash or CPF reserve are not potentially working hard for me.  Besides, the value of the monies are depreciating with increasing inflation.  Even my then HDB unit is a decaying assets.  That was when I noted the better way is to invest into a private property that would yield higher capital appreciation. 

I bought my first private property with zero knowledge about property investing.  I then joined the real estate industry and through the years I have a better glimpse and acquired knowledge about property investing.  Equipped with the knowledge and what I had went through, I shared with my clients in details about Property Wealth Planning.  Thus they can entered into their buying decision with prudent, supported by information and proper financial planning.
